The Ries The Nördlinger Ries is a large meteoric crater (22 km by 24 km) which came into being about 14 million years ago. It is clearly visible from the air. Scientists assume that the meteor was about 1,5 kilomtres in diameter and hit the earth at a speed of 54.000 to 180.000 kilometres per hour. The Ries is the best-preserved as well as the best-researched meteoric crater in the world. Even NASA-astronauts held geologoical trainings in the Ries before going on their missions in space (Geopark Ries).  Numerous bicycle paths and hiking trails invite visitors to explore the region (Holiday Region Donau-Ries).   |
