Rothenburg ob der Tauber

... a travel through time from the Dark Ages to Romanticism

Rothenburg

"A walk through the Tauber Valley is a walk through German history", wrote Wilhelm Heinrich Riehl in his essay from 1865. In this description, Rotheburg is praised as an art and cultural monument.

The beauty of Rothenburg and its surroundings was made known by Romantic poets and painters. The rich and eventful history of this former Free Reichsstadt as well as the cohesive medieval townscape, which lies high above the deeply carved Tauber Valley, attracts art and architecturally interested visitors. A special appeal radiates from three historical groups, "The Meistertrunk", ""Schäfertanz" and "the Hans Sachs Games", which are obliged to old traditions. There are also several other "Historical Groups" which re-enact Reichsstadttage of the town's history.

Some of the outstanding sights are, for example, the Gothic Church of Saint Jacob with its altar by Tilmann Riemenschneider, the Town Hall, the defences with their military transitions and the castle's garden. Numerous museums like the Criminological Museum with its legal collection, the Reichsstadt Museum and its rich treasures from Rothenburg's past, the German Christmas Museum as well as the Doll and Toy Museum are worth a visit.
